We're out, in field, on a new Operating Room build and we need light, lots of it, for a temporary staging area out in the parking lot. Commercial lighting stands are expensive, not tall enough and not bright enough. So I designed these 10' telescoping towers based on plasma cut parts and readily available EMT Conduit (1.25", 1" and 0.5") and also a couple really bright (180 LED) outdoor fixtures. A couple aluminum and delrin bushings may need to be turned on a lathe, depending on how sophisticated you want to get the telescoping columns running. The parts are cut from 16ga steel sheet, bent, folded and bolted appropriately to form one stationary arm support at the base and one sliding column brace. The lighting units I used were obtained from a garage sale and they are very bright 180LED each.
