I thinned down the arms a little and used 12 gauge steel (.105"). After some testing with electrical tape, I powder-coated mine black and used heat shrink tubing. I ultimately used the same lasers linked in the original design. I tried smaller-diameter lasers but some lenses were unfocusable, (and unreturnable), and gave up.
